IOSHâs flagship âcatch the waveâ programme, which aims to harness the power of social sustainability will not finish at the end of the year, according to the organisationâs president.
Speaking at Safety and Health Expo in London, Louise Hosking told delegates âthis is just the beginningâ.
âPost COVID, Catch the wave is a call to action for employers of any size to recognise their role in harnessing the power of your people by reaching out to occupational safety and health professionals, who operate at the heart of every society,â she added.
Ms Hosking said it was time for employers to recognise the contributions of their own workforces, particularly over the last few years, and reach out to health and safety professionals who can ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of workers.
âWeâre able to evaluate risk and work with organisations to help them focus on the highest priorities,â she told the conference.
âOur skills are in demand, and we need to harness this demand in the right way.â
Ms Hosking added there was an âunstoppable wave of changeâ moving through the way companies do business, which was âsending ripples through supply chains and beyondâ.
âItâs no coincidence that those businesses setting high standards for the treatment of their workforces, communities and supply chains are reporting stronger performance and growth,â said Ms Hosking.
âEmployees and customers will call out poor working conditions and demand better. But this is not just about doing the right thing. Social sustainability is the backbone of corporate resilience.
âThe way we work is shifting,â she added. âThere is a global skills crisis and the manner in which we retain our talent has become more critical than ever. We know people coming into the workforce are now asking questions about how that organisation operates, how they treat their staff, and how they look after their staffâs wellbeing.â
âWeâve got to come together as a profession and itâs extraordinary and excitingâ
