CEMEX UK is celebrating a number of health and safety achievements made by member companies of the Group in recent months.
CEMEX Readymix and Mortars recently passed the one-year mark without a lost-time injury – the first time in its history it has done so. The Readymix division has 226 sites, including many small sites manned by one employee for extended periods of time, with multiple deliveries by independent hauliers to tens of thousands of different construction sites every year. The structure of the business makes it a significant challenge to achieve no LTIs.
CEMEX Cement’s three operational sites and their quarries also celebrated another ‘first’, with two years without an employee LTI. CEMEX Cement also bagged a total of 12 awards from RoSPA at its annual awards in Birmingham in May.
Meanwhile the Readymix Central Region was presented with the internal CEMEX National Safety award in recognition of its commitment, engagement and leadership.
CEMEX says that one of the main factors influencing all these achievements is its Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) programme, which encourages senior management, supervisors and managers to look at all aspects of health and safety on the sites for which they are responsible.
The programme is focused on improving safety behaviour through observation and discussion, and via a series of workshops, initiated in 2009, which focus on line-management safety-leadership skills. Unannounced site visits to observe safety behaviour and discuss safety with the workforce form part of the programme and, in 2010, managers and supervisors across the operations made 4953 VFL site visits.
The company’s director of health and safety, Andy Taylor, commented: “These achievements are significant but we must continue to endeavour to achieve our target of zero injuries. It is a major challenge to ensure that approximately 4000 colleagues across 400 locations remain safe every single day and continue to look out not only for themselves but colleagues around them.”
David Rawlins, award manager at RoSPA, added: “RoSPA firmly believes that organisations that have demonstrated their commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition. CEMEX UK Operations has shown that it is committed to striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it with the presentation of these awards.”
