Balfour Beatty earns acclaim for road-safety initiative

Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions has won a road-safety award for the fourth consecutive year.

The firm received the Brake Fleet Safety Forum Award in the company driver safety category at a dinner on 1 July. The entry was centred on measures it has taken to eliminate driver risk as part of its ‘ZERO HARM’ initiative, which aims to eliminate the risk of the company being at fault in a road traffic collision.

As part of the initiative the firm company has ordered 700 Mercedes Sprinter cans, which is recognised as the safest in its class. It has also included the use of RiskMaster, an online driver-screening process that risk scores each driver before they are granted access to a company vehicle. Each van has also been fitted with a GreenRoad device, which provides real time information on how a vehicle is being driven.

The judges commented that the project was ambitious, and they were impressed that the initiative had already led to a 30 percent reduction in at-fault collisions.

Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions director of operations support, Brent Mitchell, said: “We are delighted at being honoured at the Fleet Safety Awards for the fourth year running. The award reflects and recognises the hard work that has been put into implemented the scheme and also the commitment of our entire workforce to eliminating at fault road traffic collisions.€ᄄ €ᄄ“The investment in Sprinter vans is something we are particularly proud of as our industry has typically relied on lower-specification vehicles in order to lower costs. This really shows the commitment to safety that is ingrained here at Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions.”
